Critical food policy literacy: Conceptualizing community municipal food policy engagement

Food policies should be informed by those whom they intend to serve, but policy-making processes remain exclusive privileged voices, knowledge, and experiences. activists, organizations, academia have worked make policy inclusive through training communities in food policy, potentially increasing their literacy (FPL). In this paper, I argue that making processes, information, accessible community actors can better prepare them participate in, interpret, control system policies, especially at the municipal level. build on premise a clear understanding of is necessary (if not sufficient) condition for engagement systems formulation, planning, implementation. Existing literature has thoroughly defined (FL) (PL), there been very limited work defining “food literacy.” To address conceptual gap, article bridges scholarship with critical Paulo Freire answer: How do we understand literacies tied policy? What does (or what could) it mean literate? into transform systems? Following analysis, propose FPL ‘reading world words,’ awareness contextual authentic learning practice, collective transformation.
